Diamonds: size isn’t everything

Teresa - April 21 2010

In American romantic movies and series diamonds in engagement rings often play an importan role. The bigger the jewel the greater the love, that’s what we’re told subliminal. But just like with so many other things in life, the size alone isn’t what matters, it’s the quality. For diamonds four criteria are used, known as the 4Cs: Carat, Color, Clarity and Cut. Carat thereby stands for the size, because you certainly can’t neglect it totally. But it isn’t the same as the carat amount in gold which states the clarity. The term carat comes from the greek term for the carob (keratio) whose seeds were used in the past to define the weight of a jewel, due to the carob seeds even weight. One seed usually weights 0.2 gram, that’s why today 0,2 gram is exactly 1 ct.

At first 0,2 gram doesn’t sound like a lot, but a diamond in brilliant grinding in this size would have a diameter of 6,5 milimeters and a height of 4 milimeters. The dream of every (american) bride! A nightmare for the groom if he’s not well moneyed and wants to fulfill the other three features of quality as well… What’s the use of the greatest diamond if it doesn’t have a nice granding, if it seems dirty and is full of inclusions? That’s why the attention should be on cut, color and clarity.

The diamonds in TeNo jewelry turn out smaller than 1 ct.,  however, every single diamond satisfies with its selected quality: the brilliant grinding, the smooth white (Top Wesselton) and the only small inclusions (small inclusions/si) which you can only see at an enlargement of 10 times. We’ll come to this in later articles.

The size of the diamonds at TeNo range from 0,008 ct. to 0.1 ct. whereas the smaller jewels are usually collected in a paveé and build a greater unity. Paveé is French and means cobblestone. Stone at stone the diamonds fill almost without gap a greater space. All together that somtetimes can be half a carat, a full carat or even three carats! The bracelet ShiKou de luxx with all jewel-elements and diamond-paveé together would be ca. 3,20 ct., that’s 0,64 gram and a little bit more than three carob seeds.
